New style? Pencak Silat

I'm making this post in homage to one of my favorite martial arts films: The Raid 2. It's an Indonesian film that showcases their formal martial art Pencak Silat very well. There are a few things I like about this style that might have potential in the game.

1) It's very elegant and graceful. While it doesn't have the visual flow of Jackie Chan's Drunken Master, the movements do mesh together extremely well.
2) It is relentless and brutal. Like Muay Thai or Krav Maga, it's meant to destroy your opponent.
3) It's closer combat. This is probably the most defining characteristic in my opinion. Absolver is very much based on the absolute range of attacks, where as Pencak Silat, or boxing, become very intimate.
For example, in the beginning of this video, the two characters nudge their way slightly towards each other before starting. This clip also showcases a few moves that aren't in Absolver that would fit in very well. Spoilers for the film:

You can watch a more traditional demonstration here (RIP headphone users):

Thoughts? It'd be really cool to see some influences of this style into the game.

  • I know it's just a movie, but damn, these guys can take a beating! What are thier heads made of?!

Back to the topic. I think it looks cool, and could play well in Absolver. It would be a tough match against wide and slow atack decks, like kicks only. They just need an idea for an unique and interesting special ability.

That's the complicated part, is adding a new style. Because Silat incorporates grapples and blocks (parry). Grappling would be immensely complicated in Absolver, I think. Fantastic if it works flawlessly, but how do you balance such a system? How do you map it intuitively on a controller?
At the very least there are some great moves in both clips that would fit our standard Absolver model, for now. Honestly a few moves that land you in a sitting position could be pretty sweet.
  • Hey everyone, thanks for sharing your thoughts and references on Pencak Silat! (Great nod to The Raid 2 as well, it's one of my favourites.)

It's a much rarer martial art, which is why it's a really interesting one, and while I can't guarantee it'll make it into the game, I'll make sure the team see it!

Thanks again, and please keep the discussion coming, this is great stuff!
  • I Love the raid as well, but incorporating some moves would indeed be challenging but also would be phenomenal if done correctly. I would love to see other fighting styles from other Martial art films in Absolver.
would love to see if i can recreate some of the fights from crouching tiger, hidden dragon.
