Future weapons: staff discussion.

I think it's basically confirmed staves will exist at some point in the future, I feel there should be some discussion on this weapon.

Subjects of discussion I can think of:
  • Cut\blunt distribution and the potential of spears\other polearms fitting under the staves category
  • Learning the moves of staves and how they would be implemented into the current game (chance to be a stave rather than sword?)
  • The extra range potential on staves and how it could affect balance
  • Anything else?
Would spears be able to function under the staves category? I imagine many moves would do blunt damage If used as a stave...

  • given both staves and spears are long "polearms" I imagine spears could function as staves but given the sharp tip they would need a few moves of there own to utilize the sharp tip, like a quick jab or a slice using the tip specifically. because a spear that's used as only a blunt object is a waste of a spear.

True, that is something I have been wondering, I'm not entirely sure of how staves would be used but something like a Naginata where it can used for slashing I imagine would fit better than something designed only for thrusting (I don't know much about weapons, I imagine spears would have as much variety as swords do, considering their importance)

Spears would function the same, just shift the damage closer to cut than blunt. They both have quick jabs, sweeps and twirls. The moves should focus on mobility and range for staves, with rapid forward and backward momentum. (Moves that involve say, pole jumping or cart-wheeling or other maneuvers, using the pole either to support/move quickly and hitting with your limbs or as part of an offensive strike-during-movement)

It should be about attacking from outside of their reach if it's managed properly.
  • Hey everyone, thank you so much for sharing your ideas in this lively discussion! I'm especially liking the finer differences between a typical staff (such as a Bo) and a pointed spear (like a Qiang), as well as ideas for potential moves and how they should function!

I can't promise that they'll be implemented, but I'll be taking your thoughts and feedback to the team and make sure it's seen!

There's a lot of great stuff in here, so please keep it coming!
  • There's a recent thread on the Steam forums that's been discussing this very thing (spears vs. staffs). (link is: http://steamcommunity.com/app/473690/discussions/0/2765630416826353696/ if you want to look at it).

That said, I agree with Crassard. I think it'd be a lot like how most swords have cut damage but the busted up green crystal-y sword is all blunt damage. Some staff moves would use the weapon's cut damage (if it has any, as would be the case with a spear) but they'd all still be usable either way.

Naginata were primarily slashing weapons that could also be used to stab (same as a katana). The yari (Japanese spear) was what was used primarily for stabbing.
