Stagger spam is real.
I really am not sure how I feel about this style. I get why it is what it is but I can’t help but feel it is the most annoying fighting style to fight against. At least against really good stagger users. Style abilities seem to activate on a dime. Feinting against them can be and usually is risky. Fighting an expert stagger user who utilizes every directional style ability is, for me, the toughest fights I see in combat trials. I am not calling for nerfs or anything. In fact, I rematch all stagger users so I can better myself against them. I’m just looking to see how some of the other players feel about this style. It is the only style I have yet to master, and I may end up switching so I can familiarize myself better with the style. I’m a forsaken user btw if that makes any difference?

1:Your defensive Ability is the most effective tool to counter stagger. you can use it after fast attacks that have been dodged or after feinting slow attack. In general use your parry to counter the dodges, you get alot more advantage from a successfull parry than he does from a suc. dodge.
2: Counter moves for stagger arent only thrusts wich they cant backdodge, consider putting more in your deck:
-long sweeps llike low spin heel can be dodged but often stagger canT hit you with the backdodge kick afterwards
so they are pretty save.
-tracking moves like wallop blow, fast cross, plexus elbow, front kick, bending palm
-use a thrust into a ducking move, even if he sidedodges the sidedodge wont hit you this way
-use 12 frame sweeps like hooks and so on wich stagger cant dodge on reaction in close combat with step
canceling
-you can use 11 or 10 frame moves to interrupt stagger dodges, for example feint into them
- Ok ill just list other counters: Charged haymaker, Run up strike, drunk stomp, handstand kick, whirlwind double
punch, backfall strike and flute swing, wide out hook or spinning back kick to trigger their backdodge, feint them
into a parry for example, and when they think youll parry you dont feint and applie the insane damage.
3: last and most cheesiest counter is to manuel dodge the stagger attack since the range of it is low all the time, the manuel dodge is save af
1/ Running out of stamina very quickly.
2/ Skillful Forsaken players who can parry my every 4th move or so.
@methamos: Tips on how Stagger players can beat Forsaken players would be useful.
My main way of managing stamina is to back off when i notice that i have low stamina, preferably after hitting my opponent with a guard break because that gives a decent stun even if it is blocked. Then backing off with a dodge or two and sometimes to de-target my opponent then run away for a brief rest.
Another way is to simply let my opponent hit me when i have zero stamina which causes my stamina to replenish quite quickly - risky of course because it requires me to take one or more unguarded hits then regain the upper hand in the fight.
There are basically 3situations you want to lead a forsaken player into:
1:he parrys to the wrong direction or at the wrong time (you feint or do a slower move than expected) . To accomplish that properly its often necessary to
A; feint guard breaks or slow attacks into fast attack that punish the wrong parry
(Note never feint an attack 100% of the time or its getting obvious. As general rule to feint moves of 19frames or slower id say feint 50-85% depending on your opponents behaviour)
B; build some speed variations into your deck
(6-9frame difference is often the most usefull)
C;delay your attacks manually (note this doesnt work with slow moves because they can be parryed on reaction
D; increase your mix up with techniques like step cancelling, feint switching or lock off switching (I could go deeper on this if asked) as an addirion to your primary and secondary attack.
2: we break his guard with unexpected heavy attacks to follow up with a punish (punishing can be up to 350damage with the right deck but that would be an additional topic)
We have different ways to do that.
A;find your opponents favourite parry moves .
(Moves he likes to parry.)
Use heavy attacks right before those moves cause he is used to block at this point in time
B; feint and switch stance to a guard break immediately (only use rarely)
C:use medium attacks that drain alot of stamina (+40)
to force your opponent to parry uncomfortable fast moves
3. Trick forsaken players into a wrong game speed
-forsaken often have to decide if they go for parry or maybe for an attack because they guess that you will feint.
You can make this decision really hard by switching combos of different speed and avoiding repetition of any kind
Important extra: use your own defensive ability after a feint to avoid the forsaken s starting attack
Specific rule for stagger:
Dont use stagger attacks offensively to often. To slow , to few damage. Against good forsaken players you even have to feint the dodges sometimes cause they are parryable too.
So far the most important. Some of those points are general rules against any style
1.all defensive abilities start up slower since downfall
2.that youre parrying after the hit, or that your parry timing seems right but you still get hit, or you might feint and the feint wont start...
All that problems seem to be cause by a desync problem.
