You're not naming your character, you're naming your save file. We keep your in-game name associated with your platform account for better recognition by other players and better interaction with Friends List features on those platforms.
But the save files are not unlinked. You can't start a new toon and go to a new school to try it out. The new character is still accoc with the old characters school.
