Dropped into Combat Trials with two people already fighting!
So I queued up for combat trials after the patch came out and after one of those obnoxiously long loading screens, I got dropped into a map with two people already dueling. The Altar was still there, too. I recorded it at the link below.

Now I'll admit this was kind of funny, but I've been waiting since release day for the game to be playable without game shattering bugs, and they're still in the game, so I'm really not amused.

What you experienced was a bug but different one. Not the duel itself. You were loading into your duel and it failed, thus you returned to normal map next to the altar and it just so happened that 2 players were fighting next to you.
Note:
- location after loading (next to the same altar that you started queueing for Combat Trials),
- location of duel this is not Combat Trials map, closest to this one is in the building where you fight Marked One or this boss in form of 2 NPCs, not sure which PVE fight happens there exactly,
- missing Combat Trials UI which shows how many duels you've won and how many did your opponent won,
- fact that you died and could be revived by other players, or by holding F, this is not a thing in Combat Trials duel.
Bug with loading into CT duel seems to be common one unfortunately, reported it in:
- Combat Trials failed loading, being stuck for 10 minutes,
- Can you fix infinite loadings? (I think it's about the same issue,)
