Character origin changed suddenly

My character's origin changed from The Tear to Karshi. The change happened inexplicably after respawning during regular play (solo, but encounters enabled) in the Oratian Quarter. The change appears to be permanent; exiting and restarting does not restore my character's origin, and the menu for changing appearance at an altar confirms that my origin is now Karshi.

I've seen a number of other posts mentioning the same problem, but can think of no common cause in particular that would apply here. Is there a way to fix my origin without spending precious crystals?

    Update: Manually loading my game, rather than selecting "Continue" in the title screen menu, appears to have restored my old origin.
