Stagger is so broken

So I picked playing stagger style specifically because it's supposed to be hard. But since the update it's damn near impossible. I'm not sure what happened, maybe other styles got buffs that are specifically unbalanced toward stagger, but it's almost not worth playing anymore it seems. There's almost no damage output compared to other styles, where it seems like that used to be a drawback of stagger but not one that was so hard to overcome. What makes it worse is, dodging to left or right there is now a delay where you can't jab a punch quick enough, even with a successful evasion, before your befuddled opponent just mashes a button and spins around and jabs you first. Dodging charge attacks, the charge attacks sometimes follow you around, making it unpredictable. Meanwhile, stagger is already a glass jaw style. You can't afford to make many mistakes, but with the added unpredictability of dodges not dodging, and side dodges leaving you completely vulnerable to quick jabs, there's just nowhere to go with it.
Maybe I'm wrong, but put up against a quick khalt for instance, that's an automatic loss for me. And others are pretty tough to touch.
Some input from the player base is welcome, any other stagger fighters out there struggling to not get wrecked? Or is it just my perception?

  • Hey Lukin, I'm an avid stagger player even after 1.13 and I'm still loving it. People make the mistake of thinking stagger's special ability is defensive. Yes, it can be used for defense but I find it just as useful as an offensive tool. And I find the back kick especially useful to evade most attacks if you time it right. Are you on PC? I would be happy to hook up for a sparring session and show you some tricks.
  • Thanks for the response, man. No, I'm on ps4. Maybe it's just my perception or over-thinking things after the update, making it seem more screwy than it really is.
  • I although played stagger even though i play forsaken now. Maybe try to cancel your stagger moves more often to get into your block faster. That way you can stack your stamina buff without getting hit to often. After a short time your enemie will have much less stamina than u and u can break his guard easiely.
At least thats my advice for playing stagger defensively.
But Bilon is right stagger is great at attacking.
  • After running through some more fights and rethinking, it's starting to feel like stagger's philosophy is just more pronounced now. It's defense can be a potent offensive weapon, but gold linking attacks after a successful blow is much more important, as is relying on counters for most of your damage. I'm going to keep tinkering with it. Perhaps a separate thread for stagger users to unite and share ideas is in order.
  • I'd be happy to jump into that thread. I have ideas and stuff.
  • Just experienced the same complaint i had previously. Successful dodge, then couldn't even get a jab in before I was getting pummeled again. Virtually no advantage to dodging attacks, and significant downside, in fact, since with stagger there's that little shove he gives, which does nothing and let's your opponents turn slightly by performing a special move called "smash my controller into my face" and start beating you senseless.
